R. \u0160tef\u00e1nik Gymnasium in Nov\u00e9 Z\u00e1mky<\/strong>, achieved extraordinary success at the <a href=\"https:\/\/isef.net\/\">Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2025\u00a0 \u00a0i<\/a>n Columbus, Ohio, USA, where he won the main prize of the competition - the<strong> George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award<\/strong> - and a financial prize of <strong>$100,000.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For his innovative research and development of the drug \"<strong>Antivirals from Corn - A Novel Sereoselective Synthesis of Galidesivir from Furfuryl Alcohol\",<\/strong> he won the award in the <strong>Chemistry category,<\/strong> which can stop viruses from copying genes and control infections.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Regeneron ISEF 2025 competition, held May 10-16 in Columbus, celebrated its <strong>75th anniversary<\/strong> and welcomed nearly<strong> 2,000 finalists<\/strong> from more than <strong>60 countries<\/strong>. Regeneron ISEF is considered the largest international science competition for high school students, offering prizes totaling more than $8 million.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adam Koval\u010d\u00edk has <strong>developed a more efficient and cheaper way<\/strong> to synthesize the antiviral drug <strong>galidesivir<\/strong>, which is effective a<strong>gainst RNA viruses such as COVID-19, Ebola and Zika<\/strong>. His method uses <strong>furfuryl alcohol extracted from corn husks,<\/strong> reducing the number of synthetic steps from 15 to 10, cutting production time from nine to five days, and lowering the cost from <strong>$75 to about $12.50 per gram<\/strong>. By utilizing inexpensive materials from corn stover, he proposed a shorter and more efficient way to produce galidesivir. In addition, he has created a <strong>new antiviral molecular derivative<\/strong> that, according to preliminary calculations, could be up to five times more effective than the original galidesivir. The simpler production of these drugs facilitates their research and, if approved, also improves their availability, which expands our options for treating viral infections.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adam Koval\u010d\u00edk has already received valuable accolades during special awards ceremonies, where he was awarded 2nd place by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acs.org\/membership\/student-member.html?utm_campaign=SO-ACS-Membership-Global-Student-NA\/EU&amp;utm_source=Google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=21875600081&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADjDcaS3auWaTdbv2cPINhB8oaIsn&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwravBBhBjEiwAIr30VAaKTfKszXdHsy6B158jISSk72JMPQeNQZUpChYgaVxwvYTVpYxWRhoCRd0QAvD_BwE\">American Chemical Society<\/a><\/strong> and 1st place by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dcat.org\/\">The Drug, Chemical and Associated Technologies Association for his scientific contributions.<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His research impressed the judges not only for its scientific value, but also for its elegant chemistry and confident presentation.
