The European Research Council and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, in cooperation with national academies from the Netherlands, Finland, Cyprus, and the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS), are organising an event entitled “Towards the European Fifth Freedom and Global Competition: Voices from Science” on 29 June 2026. The event will bring together policymakers, scientists, and other stakeholders to discuss the future direction of the European research and innovation landscape.
The discussion will focus on the future of European research and innovation in the context of preparations for the 10th EU Framework Programme (FP10), European competitiveness, and global scientific cooperation. The event also takes place at a time of intensive discussions on the future of European research and innovation and the development of an agile European ecosystem. This ecosystem is expected to connect the European Research Area (ERA), the European Innovation Area, and the European Education Area with initiatives such as the so-called 28th Regime and Choose Europe for Science.
Programme and registration
The programme will include panel discussions dedicated to excellent science in Europe, the future of FP10, the knowledge economy, and international scientific cooperation.
The aim of the event is to foster dialogue on:
• the design of an attractive and impactful FP10 programme,
• building an agile European research and innovation ecosystem,
• strengthening Europe’s competitiveness and strategic autonomy,
• ensuring responsible international cooperation in science and technology under new geopolitical conditions.
Speakers will include, among others, President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) Martin Venhart, European Commissioner for Start-ups, Research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva, and ERC President Maria Leptin. More detailed information about the programme is available at this link.
