Professor Miroslav Kocifaj received the Galileo Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to light pollution research over the past 15 years. His work, that included groundbreaking studies on radiative transfer theory of skyglow, pioneering estimates of skyglow from satellites and space debris and the development of the SkyGlow Simulator software package, has played a crucial role in enhancing the understanding of light pollution and its environmental effects.
The prize was announced during the Under One Sky conference in November 2024. This is only for the second time the coveted Galileo Award has been given to a laureate from a former Eastern Bloc nation in the 21 years since its creation.
The Galileo Award is presented to acknowledge exceptional contributions to research or academic work on light pollution over an extended period of time.
