Today we present you another in a series of #SKstartUP stories – Elia
The European Commission has published the results of the second WomenTechEU call for innovative European deep-tech companies founded by women. 134 selected companies funded under Horizon Europe’s European Innovation Ecosystems work programme will be able to receive an individual grant of €75,000 this year to support the early steps of their innovation process and the growth of their company. Among them is also a Slovak startup – the Institute of Language Technology and Education with its Elia project.
Elia is a smart assistant for English learners beyond the beginner level. It uses artificial intelligence and scientific findings to connect to your daily activities at work, home, or school and turn them into a powerful learning experience.
This assistant connects learning English with routines, such as writing emails at work, watching YouTube videos, or reading an article for a biology class. Elia is based on 1,687 studies in cognitive linguistics and is developed using machine learning and natural language processing techniques It comes in the form of a Chrome plugin that provides help when you browse in English. Based on these interactions, it detects your problems in English and created personalized exercises in a mobile app from the content that you browsed and had problems with.
The startup aims to reduce inequality by wanting to help people learn English because they believe that English shouldn’t be the reason you don’t get a job, a higher salary or a boyfriend.
The startup has also received an EXIST grant for startups from the German government and an investment from a Slovak investment fund.
