Out of 136 exceptional young scientists between the ages of 14 and 20, the Slovak students Alex Kanderka and Jozef Jabczun were awarded a third prize for their outstanding project on „Sorption and phytoremediation of PCBs and heavy metals and their subsequent impact on plant physiological processes“. They qualified for the European final by winning the national competition – Festival of Science and Technology 2022 in Bratislava, organized by the Association of Youth, Science and Technology (AMAVET).
Initiated by the European Commission, EUCYS provides aspiring students with an opportunity to showcase their talents and interests in multiple fields, such as biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environment, mathematics, medicine, physics, and social sciences in competition with their equally talented peers.
EUCYS contest provides a valuable platform to support young students‘ careers in research and innovation, giving them the opportunity to interact with their peers and receive expert guidance at the European level. As women are still under-represented in research and innovation, supporting young women scientists is a key objective of EUCYS. This year, 50 young women participated in the competition out of 136 total participants.
EUCYS is part of Widening Participation and Spreading Excellence actions funded under Horizon Europe.
